The company, which owns websites including Vox, The Verge and SB Nation, had been targeting revenue of about $200 million in 2018, which would have translated into about 25% growth over last year’s haul of roughly $160 million, the people said. Instead, the company will be struggling to achieve double-digit percentage revenue growth, the people said.
Vox’s failure to meet its goals is no surprise. Early this year, the company announced layoffs of around 50 employees, mainly those who worked on video.
During the last few years, a number of left-wing news sources have seen substantially stalled growth.

In February, news broke that CNN would lay off a number of employees, mainly from its digital news side, after it failed to meet revenue targets.
Last November, left-wing BuzzFeed fired about 100 employees after the company fell 20 percent short of its revenue target.

“As our strategy evolves, we need to evolve our organization, too — particularly our Business team, which was built to support direct sold advertising but will need to bring in different, more diverse expertise to support these new lines of business,” BuzzFeed CEO Jonah Peretti said in an email to employees.
“Unfortunately, this means we have to say goodbye to some talented colleagues whose work has helped us tremendously.”

Jeong has a long history of racist tweets denigrating white people. She has complained about “dumbass fucking white people” and tweeted “CancelWhitePeople”:

Despite these racist tweets coming to light, the Times did not fire Jeong.

The Head of Consumer Revenue will grow and be responsible for Vox Media’s subscription and overall consumer revenue business and strategy, and help the company become a leader in the industry. This person will work collaboratively with network leads and the executive team to define, implement and deliver an ambitious consumer revenue strategy that will unlock growth within existing businesses, including New York Magazine and Vox Contributions, and discover new opportunities. This person will report to the President of Vox Media.

Champion subscription and consumer revenue opportunities and become a voice of the consumer with internal stakeholders to deliver a coherent go-to-market strategy
Refine and drive an editorial experience product vision, in collaboration with key stakeholders and informed by rigorous market research and testing, that combines the networks’ editorial approach with market opportunities
Collaborate cross functionally with product, engineering & infrastructure teams to facilitate relationships and partnerships that support infrastructure across Vox Media to promote various business models / approaches to consumer revenue

Identify consumer revenue KPIs that will help focus the organization on the highest-impact work, and hold teams accountable for those KPIs

Guide consumer revenue and user research, to better understand what readers want from our products and to inform our strategy and priorities
Develop rigorous investment cases and business models with the finance team to forecast growth and evaluate opportunities
Oversee critical vendor relationships that support a seamless consumer journey, advocating on behalf of their experience and ensuring the best performance possible
